HISTORY

In 1971, Oak Hill Hardware, then a Trustworthy Hardware, opened in Scarborough, ME. After a decade of successful business at Oak Hill as well as at Pond Cove Hardware, owners Pat and Harry Hughes opened Dunstan Hardware in West Scarborough. Shortly after Dunstan was established, the location at Pond Cove was closed. Oak Hill & Dunstan, which would become Ace Hardware stores, continued to thrive and became an important and trusted business in the community. In the early 2000s, Oak Hill expanded its sales floor by converting adjoining space in the same building. A third and final renovation further extended the sales floor and improved the functionality of the back office. Today, Oak Hill & Dunstan Hardware remain a staple in the community, dedicated to serving the residents of Scarborough and neighboring towns.

Dan Johnson, Owner and General Manager

Dan started out as a sales associate at Oak Hill Hardware over 35 years ago in 1977. A strong and steadfast employee, Dan became the manager of Pond Cove Hardware in Cape Elizabeth (run by the same owners). He returned to Oak Hill as the manager when Pond Cove was closed in the mid-80s. Since then he grew to become the general manager of both remaining locations, and, in early 2014, he and Anne finalized the purchase of these stores! He can often be seen driving the Ace truck around town with dog Rivet in tow. On the rare occasion Dan is not working, he likes spending time with his wife, Anne, and being in the out-of-doors. He can most reliably be found frequenting local coffee establishments an/or giving you a hard time.

Anne Johnson, Owner and Business Manager

Anne joined the hardware crew at Pond Cove Hardware in 1982, shortly after her marriage to Dan. A few years later, she moved to Dunstan Hardware to work as a part-time cashier while raising her young children. She left the store in the late 90s to follow another – and very successful – career path with Girl Scouts of Maine as the program director, during which time she pursued and earned her Master’s in Adult Education. Anne returned to Oak Hill to help run the business with her husband in 2008, with the two eventually purchasing the stores in early 2014, something she is very proud of and excited about! When she can be convinced to take a break, Anne loves being creative, spending time outdoors and hanging out with her family.

Rivet Rivet hails from Alabama, moving to Maine as a young puppy in 2009. A black lab mix and all-around great dog, Rivet likes to ride in the truck with her dad, enjoys treats of any kind and loves hanging out with her friends – and she has a lot! Rivet and Sookee often hold very important meetings in the back office discussing things like what kinds of bones should be carried at the stores and testing the durability of new toys.

Sookee Sookee, a Tennessee sweetheart, made the trek up north as a young pup in 2009. A Rhodesian Ridgeback/Shepherd who loves running free and giving hugs, Sookee rapidly learned the ropes of being a hardware store dog, as coached by Rivet: meet with Rivet on important business matters, get treats, store use toys from off the shelf, get more treats, and – her most crucial task – be awesome.

Gunnar Gunnar was a pedigree Maine sled dog who lived a joyful but short two years. A Husky/Shepherd mix, Gunnar had lots of energy and a really crazy tail. She learned the ins and outs of retail under the stern direction of Rivet, Sookee and dad Tyler. She was most often seen at Dunstan and could  tell you a thing or two about Lupine harnesses and leashes - she tested the "guaranteed if chewed" promise!

Tyler Wood, Manager - Oak Hill

Tyler’s hardware career began at Oak Hill in late 2004 as a quiet, reserved sales associate soaking up the nuts and bolts of the biz. His knowledge and agreeable demeanor lead him to become the assistant manager at Dunstan, and eventually manager in 2012. Tyler holds a degree in communications with a focus on video production and has written, produced, edited and otherwise been a part of numerous short films which have enjoyed success on the local, national and international film festival circuit. Tyler has been nominated for and won awards for his work, and he continues to hone his craft and expand his list of credits doing freelance work. He’s often seen with dogs Sookee and Gunnar and hanging out at home with Rebecca and their cats.

Nate Johnson, Manager - Dunstan

Nate began his tenure with Oak Hill & Dunstan Hardware as an associate at age 15. He quickly moved through the ranks and became manager of Dunstan in his mid-twenties. After a brief hiatus to focus on music and his wife’s photography business (Justine Johnson Photography), Nate returned to take the manager position at Oak Hill in 2012. He enjoys spending his free time hanging out with his wife, Justine, and their cats. He is an accomplished musician, having been an integral member of a local bands including In the Arms of Providence, Too Late the Hero, and, most recently, The Baltic Sea. He also writes and records his own music as solo act Tomorrow Stops

Sue Biardi, Accounts Payable

Sue, affectionately known as “Sue B,” came to Oak Hill & Dunstan in 2000 as an office associate. Since then she has learned the ins and outs of the back office and become an invaluable member of the team, now serving as the accounts payable expert. A brilliant baker, Sue B graces both stores with goodies every week – a tradition that has become something of an institution, often extending beyond the employees! She in undoubtedly everyone's favorite person at the stores. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Cliff, and son, Matt (also a hardware store alum) and Shelties Gus and Gracie.

Rebecca Wood, Marketing Manager

Originally an office assistant during her high school years, Rebecca has served as Marketing Manager for the last six years, transitioning to a full-time position in early 2017. In addition to general marketing, Rebecca handles in-store special events, community outreach, Ace Rewards, offers and promotions and more! She has written and produced three short films and continues to expand her design and other creative work. In her down time, Rebecca is found spending time with Tyler, dogs Sookee and Indy, and their cats and renovating their old farmhouse.
